Run Flat Tyres

Lucky are those who never had the misfortune of having a flat tyre. As for the rest of us, it’s one of the worst things that can happen - right in the same bracket as a blown engine or no hot water in the shower on a December morning.

But what if we told you that it doesn’t have to be that bad? That even if you have a flat tyre, you can safely drive your vehicle to your home or a garage where you can fix it? Doesn’t it sound too good to be true?

Well, thanks to millions of pounds spent on R&D by tyre companies, we do have such tyres available in the market today. They are called run-flat tyres, and it’s not science fantasy.

Is this sorcery?

Definitely not!

It is a little science and a lot of hard work. Run-flat tyres have been in the scene since the 80s. But it has gained popularity among the masses only in the last decade.

A run-flat tyre will allow you to drive for 50 miles at a reduced speed (50mph) even when your car tyre is fully depleted. There are two types of run-flats:

  • Self-supporting: These run-flats are made of rubber compounds that can carry the load of the vehicle with little or no air pressure. However, the pre-condition of fitting these tyres is that your car should have a Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) in place.
  • Auxiliary: These have a support ring attached to the rim that carries the load in the event of a flat tyre.

What you must keep in mind though is that these are temporary solutions. You still have to repair or change your tyres. Run-flats only allow you the convenience of not having to do it by the side of the road.
